NEW YORK (December 13, 2021) — As 2021 winds down, job seekers are looking forward to new opportunities in the new year with great optimism. Today, TopResume, the world's largest resume-writing service, announced the latest results of its Job Seeker Index.
The TopResume Index of U.S. Job Seeker Sentiment, which tracks how job seekers are feeling about job market conditions and overall job security, spiked from 99 last month to 103 in November — the second-highest level of positivity reported in the past eight months. Similarly, the Current Conditions Index rebounded by 3.36% to 123 — its previous record high — compared to last month's 119. The Expectations Index also rose 4.65% to 90 from last month's 86 — matching the same sentiment as expressed in September.
“Historically, and even during a global pandemic, the end-of-year represents excitement for many job seekers because they feel reinvigorated with a 'new year, new career' spirit,” said Amanda Augustine, career expert for TopResume. “Compounded with a booming 'job seekers' market' and this optimism will likely continue well into the new year.”
Of note: Newcomers to the workforce — those with five years of experience or less — remain the most confident compared to April benchmarks, posting their second-highest level of overall sentiment at 107. On a separate note, those seeking to entirely switch careers continue to be less optimistic above overall conditions versus those who wish to take a step up or down in their current career path. While career changers show a similar level of confidence in current market conditions, their expectations for the future are 6.67% below the rest of the population.
About the TopResume Job Seeker Index
The TopResume Index of U.S. Job Seeker Sentiment is conducted online within the United States. Since it was first calculated and benchmarked in April 2021, the survey has collected data from 13,070 adults who've identified as active job seekers in the United States. Respondents are randomly selected from among TopResume's site users each month to share their opinions on current conditions and future job market and workplace expectations, and the findings are at a 99% confidence level with margin of error +/-3%.
The TopResume Index of U.S. Job Seeker Sentiment was inspired by the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index (UMCSENT) and has been computed using the same methodology. Scores of 100 or higher indicate an increase in positive sentiment compared to the April 2021 benchmarks, whereas sentiments of 99 or lower indicate an increase in negative sentiment compared to the benchmarks.
