NEW YORK (November 8, 2021) — Today, TopResume, the world's largest resume-writing service, announced the latest results of its Job Seeker Index. The TopResume Index of U.S. Job Seeker Sentiment tracks how job seekers are feeling about job-market conditions and overall job security.
For the first time since TopResume launched the index in April 2021, it dipped below 100, falling from 102 to 99 — the lowest level of sentiment reported in the past six months. Similarly, the Expectations Index fell 4.65% to 86 from last month's 90 — the lowest it's been since the index was first calculated — while the Current Conditions Index posted only a minor 0.84% decrease to 119 compared to last month's 120.
“Despite the 'Great Resignation' creating a surge in employment opportunities, it's also become the 'Great Reckoning' with certain groups because of employers not meeting their needs," said Amanda Augustine, career expert for TopResume. "This feeling of being unappreciated or underserved may lead to these feelings of pessimism, even amid such a thriving job market."
As the latest coronavirus surge eases, the ongoing addition of hundreds of thousands of jobs, month-over-month, is a sign of economic hopefulness. This brighter picture of the U.S. economy will likely continue into the new year, when job-search figures are traditionally highest.
About the TopResume Job Seeker Index
The TopResume Index of U.S. Job Seeker Sentiment is conducted online within the United States. Since it was first calculated and benchmarked in April 2021, the survey has collected data from 11,821 adults who've identified as active job seekers in the United States. Respondents are randomly selected from among TopResume's site users each month to share their opinions on current conditions and future job market and workplace expectations, and the findings are at a 99% confidence level with margin of error +/-3%.
The TopResume Index of U.S. Job Seeker Sentiment was inspired by the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index (UMCSENT) and has been computed using the same methodology. Scores of 100 or higher indicate an increase in positive sentiment compared to the April 2021 benchmarks, whereas sentiments of 99 or lower indicate an increase in negative sentiment compared to the benchmarks.
